Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. He was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
